The Fool

“Funny, isn’t it?” Durzin stared back out at the ocean as the waves broke and rolled up the beach with a hiss over the sand. “How quickly life leaves one behind. How quickly the world moves on, and one day you find you never had any friends at all,” he chuckled to himself.

He thought of Valda again, of how she let the rebels go with only a warning. The end was here, and Durzin saw it clearly. A fox could never know the ways of a wolf. They were not pack animals, and so the structure of the pack, if there ever was any, was breaking down.

Durzin felt the fight bleed out of him, like the color bleeding from the sky as day gave way to night. His time was setting in Fellfang, and he knew it. But he was not so sure he wanted to see it to the end. It would be better to abandon those that abandoned him. It would be safer for him, and perhaps the spirit of chaos would see that he would not be so easily taken advantage of. She had erred. But wasn’t to err mortal?

Perhaps he had been the fool all along.
